Gainesville, FL: Cyclist on electric bike killed in crash on East University Ave on Wednesday, August 30, 2017

A man riding a motorized tricycle died when he apparently lost control and crashed on East University Avenue near the Morningside Nature Center on Wednesday afternoon.

Callers to 911 alerted Gainesville police at 3:19 p.m. that there was a man lying in the road who appeared to be badly injured.

When responders from the Gainesville Police Department and Gainesville Fire & Rescue arrived they found Willliam C. Thomas, 84, had died of his injuries.

“It does not look like he was wearing a helmet,” said GPD spokesman Capt. Jorge Campos, who was at the scene of the investigation.
