Traverse City, MI : Man killed in crash involving semi on Maple City Road on Tuesday, November 15, 2016

Dense fog is believed to have been a factor in a fatal crash that closed a major roadway for several hours.

Michigan State Police troopers responded to the crash at 7:09 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of M-72 and Maple City Road, a release states.

Authorities determined a semitractor-trailer, driven by a Mancelona man, 47, was traveling west on M-72 when it collided with a Chrysler minivan driving south on Maple City Road.

The driver of the van, a 63-year-old Leelanau County man, likely was killed instantly and was pronounced dead at the scene, the release states. Authorities believe the Leelanau County man failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection and collided with the double gravel semitrailer.

No one else was injured in the crash and the road reopened just before 11 a.m.

Michigan State Police were assisted by Leelanau County sheriff's deputies and Cedar Area Fire and Rescue.
