A 12-year-old New Port Richey boy was killed Saturday when the van he was riding in collided with a car and he was thrown onto the roadway, authorities said.
Ernest Kelly, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Tampa, where he later died.
State troopers said the crash happened shortly before noon Saturday on Bolton Avenue near Little Road near Hudson.
A Chevrolet Impala driven by Kayla Freeman, 25 of Hudson was traveling east on Bolton and collided with the Ford Windstar, headed north on Little Road.
The van spun and overturned, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Its driver, Monique Kelly, 44, and her two sons — Ernest and William, 6 — were ejected. None was wearing a seat belt, troopers said. Her husband, Michael, was wearing a seat belt and was not ejected.
All four van passengers were hospitalized. Ernest died an hour later, troopers said. The crash remained under investigation.
