A crash on Interstate 20 in Mesquite, Texas, on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, claimed the life of a 61-year-old Kaufman, Texas, woman.

According to the Mesquite Police Department, a 2004 Dodge Ram truck was traveling westbound on Interstate 20 while pulling a utility trailer. The trailer became detached, crossed the center median, and struck an eastbound traveling van head-on near Lawson Road.

The driver of the van, identified as 61-year-old Marisela Gomez Maldonado of Kaufman, Texas, was flown by CareFlite medical helicopter to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, in critical condition. Maldonado later died as a result of her injuries, according to the Mesquite Police Department.

Two other passengers in the van, also of Kaufman, suffered minor injuries and were transported to Dallas Regional Hospital in Mesquite, Texas.

The occupants of the Dodge truck, all of Terrell, Texas, were uninjured and not involved in the collision.

“This is the first fatality accident of 2016,” according to the Mesquite Police Department. “The accident is still under investigation by the Mesquite Police Department Traffic Division.”
