HAUULA, HI : Suspected driver in fatal Hauula crash has lengthy rap sheet
A woman turned herself into police four hours after a deadly crash on Oahu's North Shore.
The accident happened on Saturday just after 2 p.m. along Kamehameha Highway fronting the Hauula Kai Shopping Center.
Vika Unga, 36, was booked for investigation of two counts of failure to render aid and one count of negligent homicide.
Police say she was the alleged driver of an SUV traveling northbound on the highway when she veered left, crossed the center line and slammed into a bus stop on the opposite side of the road.
She fled the scene, while her passenger 34-year-old David Kinikini, stayed and told officers he was the driver.
Kinikini was charged with hindering prosecution and released after posting $2,000 bail.
Around 6:30 p.m., Unga turned herself into authorities at the Kahuku Police station and identified herself as the driver.
The crash fatally injured a 61-year-old Oregon man. A 55-year-old Oregon woman sitting at the bus stop was also injured.
The woman suffered serious injuries.
"How horrible, not only for their sake the victims, but it could have been me," said Hauula resident Jim Parker.
Parker says he often sits and waits at the same bus stop and the facts surrounding the crash have left him feeling uneasy.
"It does sound fishy if she fled the scene," Parker said. "I wonder if she had been drinking and didn't want to be tested or whatever."
Sources say Kinikini told Unga to flee the scene. The two were dating.
