STAMFORD, CT : Car crashes into North Stamford pond on Tuesday, December 27th 2016

A driver escaped uninjured after crashing his car into an icy North Stamford pond Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.
The man was driving a Lexus SUV on Rock Rimmon Road about 2 p.m. when he lost control of the car and it plunged into a pond near Rockmeadow Lane.
Chief Stuart Teitelbaum, of the Long Ridge Fire Company, said the driver was able to escape the car as it was sinking, and he then broke through the ice to reach the shore.
There were no other occupants in the car.
The New York State resident, who firefighters said appeared to be in his 50s, was not taken to the hospital for evaluation. Teitelbaum said he was just wet and cold.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
Firefighters, who were called to the scene by either a neighbor or someone who was driving by, used special equipment to pull the car out of the frozen pond. The SUV was back on the shore by 2:45 p.m.
Teitelbaum said firefighters expect to return to the area to inspect a dry hydrant pipe that allows them to draw water from the pond. He said the crash may have damaged that pipe.
