Monroe County ,TN: Child killed, 9 injured in I-75 crash on Sunday night ,Ju;y 12th 2015
THP says an SUV overturned on I-75 in Monroe County just after 6 Sunday night, killing a two-year-old child and injuring nine others in the vehicle.
Two-year-old Nikayla Oliver was not in a car seat or wearing a seatbelt, according to troopers.
Investigators say the Chevy Suburban was traveling southbound when it ran over the rumble strips, blowing out the driver's side tires. The SUV crossed into the other lane, then started to turn sideways and went into the grass, where it hit a concrete culvert and flipped into a ditch, catching fire.
The crash shut down I-75 South for several hours Sunday evening.
Nine other people were taken to UT Medical Center by helicopter, including driver Shakita Counts, 37, Willie Reed, 25, Sherna Reed, 43, Eric Scales, 20, Shakita Coleman, 16, Tevia Blanks, 20, Tiana Scales, 11, Michael Scales Jr., 14, and Jakiyah Williams, 11. All are from Birmingham, Alabama.
THP issued citations at the scene of the crash and says criminal charges are pending.
