Chelsea, MA : Driver dead and passenger injured in a single vehicle crash into the brick wall of a Chelsea CVS Monday morning, November 17, 2014
An SUV crashed into the brick wall of a Chelsea CVS early this morning, leaving the driver dead and a passenger hospitalized, authorities said.
The 1 a.m. crash occurred when the driver was traveling at a “high rate of speed” on 4th Street when he hit a signpost on Cherry Street and then collided with the exterior of the building, according to the Suffolk DA’s Office.
Both the 35-year-old man behind the wheel of the 2001 GMC SUV and his 47-year-old passenger were from East Boston, according to Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.
The injured passenger remains at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Chelsea Fire Department Acting Deputy Chief Paul Giancola said the SUV “went through a brick wall” of the CVS. Firefighters had extricate the men from the vehicle using jaws of life, he said.
The crash is being investigated by detectives with Chelsea police and troopers assigned to the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit.
