Raleigh, NC: Motorcyclist killed in wrong-way crash along I-540 on Monday, August 3rd 2015
A deadly wrong-way crash that happened around 4:30 p.m. Monday left a Raleigh man dead and closed many lanes of I-540 for hours on Monday afternoon, officials say.The crash, in which a car was driven the wrong-way on the interstate and crashed with a motorcycle, was affecting eastbound lanes near I-40, according authorities.Philip James Sabino, age 44, of Cahill Road in Raleigh was riding a motorcycle and died at the scene of the crash, said Lt. Jeff Gordon of the NC Highway Patrol. All lanes except one heading east were closed for at least 2 hours.Based on a preliminary investigation, a silver 2003 Honda passenger vehicle was traveling west on I-540 when it traveled into the median, Gordon said. The Honda then traveled through the guard wire into the eastbound lanes of I-540 where it collided into a 2012 Honda motorcycle driven by Sabino, Gordon said.“The impact resulted in the motorcyclist being ejected. As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist died at the scene. It is unclear at this time what caused the driver to veer into the median,” Gordon said.Gordon added that alcohol and speed were not factors in the incident.Upon completion of the collision investigation, troopers will confer with the Wake County District Attorney’s Office about possible charges, Gordon said. All westbound lanes of I-540 were open but only one eastbound was open while investigators continued their investigation.
