Several people were injured and one person was entrapped after a serious two-car crash Friday afternoon on Elmira Road/Route 13 in Ithaca.
Members of the Ithaca Police Department, Ithaca Fire Department and Bangs Ambulance responded to the crash at 1:25 p.m. Friday at 344 Elmira Road, near Burger King and Fat Jack's.
Five of six people involved in the accident were injured, according to Ithaca police. Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to remove the entire roof of one of the vehicles, police said, and crews worked together to remove the entrapped driver.
The driver was taken to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania, by ambulance for his injuries. The severity of the driver's injuries is not currently known. The passenger of that vehicle was able to get out without assistance and was transported to Cayuga Medical Center for their injuries.
The other vehicle was occupied by four people, one of which was a young child. The child was uninjured, but the three others were transported to Cayuga Medical Center after complaints of pain, police said.
Southbound traffic in the area was diverted for more than an hour. The road reopened at about 2:45 p.m.
Ithaca police are investigating the accident.
