Three people have died in a head-on collision on U.S. 221 north of Marion.

Media outlets report that the crash occurred Wednesday afternoon. State Highway Patrol Sgt. Kevin Owens says a pickup truck was heading north on U.S. 221 when the driver crossed left of center and hit a van head-on. Emergency crews responded to the wreck shortly before 3 p.m.

The vehicles were engulfed in flames when first responders arrived on scene, making it difficult for them to reach the victims.

Three people are confirmed dead. Owens says he couldn't identify the victims until their family members have been notified.
