Pittsburg, CA : Woman dies after 3-car crash on Wednesday, July 27, 2016
A woman died at a hospital Wednesday, hours after she was in a three-car crash at a major intersection and appeared to be alert and OK, police said.
Venius Lawson, a 69-year-old Pittsburg resident, suffered internal bleeding from the crash, which happened at the intersection of E. Leland Road and Harbor Street and also hospitalized three others, Pittsburg police spokesman Capt. Ron Raman said. At least one of the patients suffered major leg injuries.
An ambulance took Lawson to a hospital as a precaution after she complained of minor stomach pain, and she died several hours later, Raman said. The Contra Costa County Coroner's Office identified Lawson on Thursday.
An officer responded to the intersection just after 2 p.m. after seeing smoke coming from the area, Raman said. According to police, Lawson's Honda van, and a Toyota Sedan were stopped at a light on E. Leland Road, when a Chevrolet truck ran a red light and collided with them. The force of the impact pushed the Honda into the middle of the intersection.
Lawson was mobile after the collision and alert when she went to the hospital, Raman said.
Eight people were in the three cars, and two of them were treated at the scene and released, Raman said. Two of them were not injured.
Police said all three drivers were cooperative and that drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.
