Steamboat Springs, CO : 64-year-old man suffers serious injuries in head-on crash on U.S. Highway 40 just west of Milner on Thursday morning, February 5, 2015

A 64-year-old Steamboat Springs man involved in a head-on collision Thursday morning suffered serious injuries that were not thought to be life threatening.

The crash occurred at about 7:45 a.m. near mile marker 119 on U.S. Highway 40 just west of Milner.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Luke Zellman said a 19-year-old Craig man was driving his pickup eastbound when he lost control and hit the 64-year-old man’s car in the westbound lane. At the time, it was foggy and the roads were wet and slippery.

West Routt Fire Protection District firefighters took the Steamboat man to Yampa Valley Medical Center, and he was later flown to a Denver hospital. The Craig man was not injured.

“It could have been a lot worse,” Zellman said.

Both cars were totaled with severe front-end damage. The drivers estimated they were driving about 60 mph when the crash occurred, and it was thought that both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.

Two dogs were in the Steamboat man’s car. One died and the other was taken to a veterinarian.

The westbound lane was blocked for a couple hours after the crash. Traffic took turns going past the crash.

The Craig man was cited for careless driving causing injury.

The names of the men involved were not released Thursday.
