Two people in a car were injured and a cow was killed in a collision on Highway 82 on Tuesday morning, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

A 2013 Hyundai Elantra was westbound in the right lane of Highway 82 just east of Catherine Store when the accident occurred, according to a state trooper’s report.

“There was a cow standing in the right lane,” the report said. “Vehicle one collided with the cow.”

The accident was reported at 5:36 a.m., about 30 minutes before sunrise. The Hyundai was the only vehicle involved in the crash. Geoffrey Stump, 51, of Basalt, was driving the vehicle, the state patrol said. A 17-year-old female was a passenger. Both suffered “moderate” injuries and were transported to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, according to the report.

No information was immediately available on whether the cow was killed outright in the crash. The vehicle suffered extensive front-end damage, according to a witness.

The Carbondale and Basalt fire departments responded to the crash because the location is in an area of mutual aid.
