Anniston, AL : Two children airlifted and three more people injured in three-vehicle crash on Wednesday October 19th 2016
A three-vehicle wreck near the intersection of Anniston Beach Road and Alabama 21 Wednesday evening sent two children to Birmingham by helicopter and three other people to local hospitals, officials said.
Weaver Fire Department got the call about the wreck at 5:59 p.m., fire Lt. Shane Adrian said at the scene. Both Adrian and State Trooper Chuck Daniel, by phone, said two children under the age of 10 were flown from Regional Medical Center in Jacksonville. Adrian said he was unsure of the ages for all five transported from the scene.
“Their injuries were largely head injuries,” Adrian said.
Anniston EMS stood by with backboards and gurneys as firefighters worked to remove everyone from a four-door tan Mazda. A child screamed as first responders helped another child on a stretcher. A woman held an IV bag for someone on the ground and a pair of children’s tennis shoes sat together on the hood of the car.
Everyone transported from the scene came from the Mazda which rested in a ditch between Alabama 21 North and a pawn shop. The passenger side doors were smashed into the center of the vehicle, the back bumper barely hanging on.
A four-door silver Toyota Corolla was parked across the highway at the self-service car wash. The front bumper was damaged, but still secured to the front of the vehicle. State troopers photographed the vehicle and took notes.
A white Chevrolet 2500 HD pickup truck sat in a patch of grass near the pawn shop parking lot, its front bumper and grill crunched toward the windshield. The driver of the pickup, who declined to provide his name, said the Mazda “all of a sudden came out of the median.”
“I slammed on my brakes,” he said. “I did the best I could.”
Anniston and Weaver police, state troopers, Weaver, Alexandria and Jacksonville fire departments all responded to the wreck along with Anniston EMS and Piedmont Rescue.
“I hope them kids alright,” said a man who came upon the wreck after it occurred.
