Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a crash involving a pedestrian and an off-duty Cape Coral Police officer Thursday night.
The crash happened in the 100 block of N.E. Pine Island Road shortly after 9 p.m. in Cape Coral.
The pedestrian, identified as John Wrensch, was crossing in the middle of Pine Island Road when he was sideswiped by an unmarked Cape Coral Police car. The pedestrian was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, but has since been discharged from the hospital.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, he was not walking in the crosswalk or wearing identifiable clothing. He was charged with failing to yield to traffic while crossing a roadway.
As normal procedure for all officer-involved crashes, an administrative review will be conducted by the Cape Coral Police Department to determine if the vehicle was being operated according to department policy.
