San Tan Valley, AZ : 16-year-old hit, killed by van while jogging in San Tan Valley on Tuesday morning, September 23, 2014
A teenage jogger was fatally injured when he was struck by a vehicle while jogging in the direction of traffic on an unlit road in San Tan Valley.
The Pinal County Sheriff's office says 16-year-old Apache Junction High School student Jared Paul Odane was wearing dark clothing, and wearing earbuds and probably didn't see or hear the vehicle him from behind about an hour before dawn Tuesday morning.
The driver immediately stopped and called 911 when he discovered the teen's body.
The Sheriff's Office says impairment does not appear to be a factor in the collision and that the driver does not face charges.
In the pre-dawn darkness, running on Combs Road in Queen Creek, Odane was training for a marathon when a van came up from behind and hit him. The teen was killed instantly.
On Wednesday, his classmates at AJHS remembered him.
"He always had a bright smile on his face walking through the halls. He was a runner, always woke up bright and early.. you'd see him running across the street and stuff," said Cameron Kunkle, a student.
The Pinal County Sheriff's Office says Odane was running with the flow of traffic.
"It is dangerous if you don't know if a car is coming behind you. It is very dangerous. You don't know what is going on. I run against traffic. Even then, still dangerous.. any car could hit you," said Jacob Briones, another student.
The principal of AJHS says Odane would have done great things.
