Wrightsville Beach, NC : Man involved in hit-and-run accident on Wrightsville Beach on Thursday afternoon, June 16, 2016

Wrightsville Beach Police have charged a man in connection to a hit-and-run accident where a 78-year-old woman was hit by a truck while riding a bicycle Thursday afternoon.

According to Chief Dan House, Joseph Klus, 34, was arrested by the Wrightsville Beach Police Department and charged with hit-and-run in connection with the accident.

He was booked in the New Hanover County Detention Center under at $25,000 bond.

Klus has two prior DWI convictions in North Carolina. Most recently, he was sentenced to probation in 2013 for a DWI that occurred in 2012.

According to House, the accident happened around 3:30 p.m. on Waynick Boulevard near the Carolina Yacht Club.

House said a silver truck hit the woman while she was riding a bicycle. The driver of the truck then drove away from the scene and House believes they left the island.

The victim was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The truck is believed to be a 4-door Toyota Tundra or Dodge Ram with damage to the front end.
