COLUMBIA, SC : Fatal crash closes Interstate 20 west near Columbia on Thursday, 3rd May 2018
The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a fatal crash involving 10 vehicles closed the main highway west out of Columbia for several hours.
Lance Cpl. David Jones said the crash happened in the westbound lanes of Interstate 20 around 11 a.m. Thursday in Lexington County near the U.S. 378 exit.
I-20 west was closed until after Thursday afternoon’s rush hour as troopers investigate the wreck and crews work to clean up debris. Officials could only reopen two lanes because the third lane was damaged badly by fire.
Jones says at lone person died and four were taken to the hospital. He says the wreck involved at least two tractor-trailers.
State Department of Transportation data says nearly 84,000 vehicles use all lanes of I-20 near the crash on an average day.
