The man and woman killed early Monday morning in a tractor-trailer wreck on Interstate 78 are both from Kentucky, the Lehigh County Coroner's Office says.
Coroner Scott Grim says in a statement that he is only identifying the victims as 42-year-old John Doe and 38-year-old Jane Doe at this time.
"Upon proper identification of next of kin and positive identification, additional information will be released," the statement says. "Extensive forensic testing will be needed for identification purposes."
The man was driving the tractor-trailer and the woman was a passenger in the vehicle when it crashed just before 1 a.m. on Interstate 78 East in Upper Saucon Township, authorities said.
The tractor-trailer hit the center median and then a bridge support before catching fire, police said in a news release. A second truck made contact with the first truck, but the driver of the second truck was no hurt, police said.
The highway was closed in both directions for several hours. The westbound lanes reopened at 8:23 a.m.; the eastbound lanes remained closed as of about 10:30 a.m.
