Macoupin County, IL : Woman seriously injured in collision with semi on Illinois 108 near Standard City Road on Monday afternoon, July 25, 2016

A 27-year-old Madison County woman was seriously injured Monday afternoon when the car she was driving rear-ended a tractor-trailer on Illinois 108 near Standard City Road in Macoupin County.

Cassie Beckert of Alhambra had to be extricated from her car and was airlifted to HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, according to Illinois State Police. She was still in surgery Monday night, a hospital spokesman said.

The driver of the semi, Charles Best, 49, of Ruston, Louisiana, was not injured.

Police said the crash occurred at 5:05 p.m. as Beckert was traveling west on 108 approaching the intersection of Standard City Road. The truck was stopped and was partially in the roadway while Best was performing maintenance on the trailer, police said.

Beckert, who struck the rear end of the trailer, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Best was ticketed for improper parking on a roadway.
