The identity has been released of a 3-month-old baby who was killed in an accident in Murfreesboro Friday morning.
According the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Landon Salas died in a two-vehicle crash that happened just after 11 a.m. on Highway 99.
Officials say two vehicles were traveling eastbound on Highway 99 just after noon when a Kia stopped in the roadway. An SUV traveling behind crashed into the Kia.
Troopers said they're unsure why the vehicle stopped.
"We heard an impact and pretty much saw the two vehicles flying apart," said Julie O'Donnell, a witness. "It's a bad thing when little kids are involved."
The driver of the SUV told troopers he looked down momentarily and looked up to see the stopped vehicle. He said he couldn't stop in time.
Two adults and three children were in the Kia. THP said the infant who was killed was in a child restraint seat.
"All crashes are hard investigations, especially the serious ones," said Sgt. Scott Miller with THP. "But when it involves a child, it's more difficult."
Two crash victims in the Kia were flown by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt Medical Center. The others in the vehicle were transported by ambulance to the hospital.
The driver of the SUV was transported to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro.
