Nephi, UT : Boy Scouts assist at scene of deadly Utah crash; help lift SUV so victim can be pulled out on Wednesday morning June 25th 2014

A group of Utah Boy Scouts heading to camp helped lift an overturned SUV off a woman who later died of her injuries.

Maria Sandoval, 60, died after the crash that happened Wednesday morning in southern Utah's Juab County, Utah Highway Patrol officials said. The male driver was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, and two girls, ages 11 and 16, were also taken to the hospital.

A Ford Explorer was on Interstate 15 near Mona when the right rear tire blew and the vehicle rolled several times, troopers said. One woman had both an arm and a leg trapped under the SUV, troopers said.

A group of boys from Cedar Hills, Utah, had been heading to the Beaver High Adventure Base Scout camp when they happened upon the crash, according to a news release from Boy Scout officials.

When emergency officials arrived and told bystanders to leave, an adult with the group offered to help the trapped woman.

"I told him I had five Varsity Scouts sitting in my van less than 100 feet from site of the crash who wanted to help," said R.L. Peay, an adult leader with the Utah National Parks Council. "They told me to bring the boys over."

The five boys had recently learned how to respond to emergencies as part of their Boy Scouts activities, officials said.

"It brought tears to my eyes to see the faces of these five boys as we lifted the SUV high enough off the ground and held it long enough so the rescuer could pull her to safety," Peay said.
