MULBERRY, WA : 2 killed when trucks collide on SR 37 on Tuesday , 27th August, 2016
Two people were killed late Tuesday afternoon in a traffic crash on State Road 37 south of Mulberry.
Henry Roque, 38, of Adams Road in Fort Meade, and Josefa Jarquin, 45, of Shady Oak Avenue in Lake Wales, were killed, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
Both were in a pickup that was struck by another pickup that had spun out of control and entered their lane of SR 37 about a quarter mile south of Radar Road.
Two other vehicles involved in the accident received minor damage and none of the occupants was injured, according to a Sheriff's Office news release.
Rain and speeding appear to have contributed to the accident that closed SR 37 in both directions for about five hours, the release said.
The accident was triggered shortly after 5 p.m. when Terry Townsend, 52, of Whisper Lake Drive in Winter Haven, lost control of his 2013 black Dodge pickup, Sheriff's Office officials said.
Townsend's truck rotated into the southbound lane, where the front of the 2006 white Chevrolet pickup being driven by Roque, collided with Townsend's truck at an angle, the Sheriff's Office said.
Townsend and Roque's other passenger, Elvia Andrea Contreras de dios, 20, of Lake Wales were taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center.
Roque was wearing a seat belt but Contreras de dios was not. It is not known whether Townsend was wearing a seat belt.
Others involved in the accident include Manishkumar Patel, 25, and passenger Payl Mistry, 22, both of Washington state. Patel was southbound in his 2013 Honda Civic, directly behind Roque. Both were wearing seat belts.
