Fredericksburg, VA : Louisa High football player dies in car crash in Hanover on Monday night, December 19, 2016
A Louisa High School football player died Monday night after his car crashed into a tree, according to the Hanover County Sheriff’s office.
Jaden Cortez Athey, 16, of Bumpass was heading west on Mountain Road in Hanover when his Mazda Sedan ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree at 11:21 p.m., Sgt. James Cooper said. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the single-vehicle accident.
Nobody else was in the car, and the cause of the crash is under investigation, said Cooper, who did note that alcohol was not a factor. Athey was wearing a seatbelt, he said.
The “Louisa County Football” Facebook page posted a picture Tuesday of Athey wearing his Louisa Lions jersey.
“It’s as sad a day as I can think of,” stated the post. “We lost a young man too soon. All of us will miss your smile and awesome sense of humor.”
