Benton County, IA: Driver struck, killed in Highway 30 accident on Monday, July 20th 2015

A driver was struck and killed on Highway 30 near Newhall late Monday night, authorities said.The Iowa State Patrol said 61-year-old Michael Moore of Vinton pulled over on the shoulder and got out of his vehicle, just east of the Highway 218 intersection, around 11 p.m., when another vehicle fatally struck him.The Iowa State Patrol said there were several witnesses to the accident.“Especially in very rural areas ... (having witnesses) especially aids in our investigation, kind of brings answers a lot of quicker,” said Eric Payne of the Iowa State Patrol.The other driver — identified as 18-year-old Cody Bergom of Belle Plaine — was treated and released at the scene.The accident shut down a portion of the highway for hours, as crews worked to clean up the scene.
