Orlando ,FL :32- Years old Adam Lee killed after he ejected through the windshield of tram on Friday morning ,May 8th 2015
A shuttle involved in a fatal accident Friday at Orlando International Airport has been repaired and restored to service, officials said.
Adam Lee, 32, died after he was ejected through the windshield of a tram Friday morning, officials said.
The broken windshield was replaced, and the three-unit tram was tested overnight, said Carolyn Fennell, spokeswoman for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.
Around 6:40 a.m., about 25 hours after the incident, the shuttle resumed normal operation, carrying passengers between the terminal building and the air-side or gate area of the airport.
Two employees of Bombardier, the company that built and maintains the electric-powered trains, were doing a routine test of the unit early Friday morning. They were operating the tram in a manual mode during the test, instead of the automated operation normally used most of the time.
The workers allowed two acquaintances aboard the shuttle, which they were not authorized to do, GOAA officials said. Only employees are permitted aboard during the tests, and only employees are permitted to operate the units.
A Bombardier worker violated protocol, according to a preliminary report from the Florida Department of Transportation.
“Injury occurred to a friend of the (maintenance worker) who was illegally escorted onto the tram. Further investigation (is) pending,” the report said.
GOAA Executive Director Phil Brown said Lee was allowed to handle the controls to the vehicle during the test. When the man released the control, the tram automatically triggered the brakes, leading to an abrupt stop, which propelled Lee through the windshield of the shuttle.
Lee fell a distance of about 15 feet and died
