Topeka, KS : Three people injured, one critically, in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 470 in southwest Topeka on Thursday afternoon, October 13, 2016
Officials said three people were injured, one critically, in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on Interstate 470 in southwest Topeka.
The crash was reported at 3:28 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of 470. One of the vehicles involved was a Kansas Highway Patrol vehicle which was rear-ended by a car, KHP trooper Don Hughes said. The KHP motor carrier inspector was stationary in a median at the time of the crash. The collision occurred between the S.W. 29th Street and S.W. Gage exits.
One person was transported by AMR with critical injuries and two with serious injuries, an AMR official said. The KHP officer and two occupants from the car were transported, but it wasn’t clear who had sustained the more serious injuries, Hughes said.
As a result of the crash, eastbound traffic was diverted to the S.W. 29th Street exit. Traffic was then closed from Fairlawn to Gage Blvd. from 3:50 to 4:25 p.m., according to the Kansas Department of Transportation. Around 4:25 p.m., outer lanes of both east and westbound traffic were open, though traffic was slowed considerably in both directions.
KHP’s Critical Highway Accident Response Team will map the scene as part of their investigation.
