Birmingham, AL : Five Montgomery students injured after rollover wreck on Interstate 65 in Chilton County on Thursday, March 3, 2016

Five Montgomery Public Schools students were injured today, three of them thrown from the vehicle, in a single-car crash on Interstate 65.

Authorities said the students were on their way to the high school basketball tournament in Birmingham.

Alabama State Trooper Sgt. Steve Jarrett said the crash happened at 10:16 a.m. on I-65 northbound at the 221 mile marker in Chilton County. It wasn't immediately known what caused the accident, but Jarrett said the vehicle rolled over and the three passengers in the back seat were ejected. They were not wearing seat belts.

One of the victims ejected was thrown all the way across the southbound lanes, Jarrett said. Another landed in the southbound lanes and the third landed closer to the vehicle.

The driver and the front seat passenger were wearing seat belts, and were not thrown.

One of the victims was flown by helicopter to Baptist South Medical Center. The other four were taken by ambulance, also to Baptist South.

All five of the victims are Montgomery Public Schools students, said schools spokesman Tom Salter. He said they were on their way to the AHSAA basketball tournament in Birmingham. Their names, ages, and schools haven't been released.

"Our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery are with them,'' Salter said.

The crash remains under investigation.
