Chicago, IL : Alcohol a factor in fatal Auburn Gresham crash on Sunday morning, July 3, 2016
Chicago Police say a man was drunk when he caused an Auburn Gresham neighborhood crash that left a 30-year-old southwest suburban woman dead Sunday morning on the South Side.
About 4:15 a.m., a minivan smashed into the truck Barbara Pettis was driving at the intersection of 78th Street and Loomis Boulevard, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The collision sent her vehicle into another car parked on the block, authorities said. Pettis, of the 5100 block of State Road in Burbank, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 29-year-old man at the wheel of the minivan was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition. Alcohol was thought to be a factor in the crash, and he was expected to be taken into custody at the hospital, police said Sunday evening.
Fire officials said another man, 35, was injured in the crash and taken to Christ in serious condition. It wasn’t clear which vehicle he was in.
CPD’s Major Accident Investigation Unit is handling the case.
