Ann Arbor, MI : Two sisters killed in Dearborn Heights crash with semi-truck on Thursday morning, August 25, 2016
Dearborn Heights, Michigan
Two sisters were killed in Dearborn Heights Thursday morning after their car was struck by a semi-truck in the area of Beech Daly and Van Born roads.
The women, who were in a Ford Focus headed north on Beech Daly Road at about 9 a.m., reportedly ran a red light when a semi-truck westbound on Van Born smashed into the car, pushing it several hundred feet down Van Born Road. The car reportedly was pushed under the semi-truck’s trailer.
“The vehicle was pinned for a short time under the semi and dragged about 200 yards west on Van Born where it came to a halt,” Dearborn Heights Police Chief Lee Gavin said.
The two young women in their 20s were sisters and pronounced dead at the scene, Gavin said, adding that their names aren’t being released until family members are notified and can positively identify them.
Gavin said it appears that the driver was on her cell phone at the time of the crash and may have been distracted.
“The young lady was on the phone, maybe driving erratically, and that maybe had a factor into this accident,” he said.
The police chief stressed the dangers of distracted driving.
“For our experienced drivers and young drivers, texting and talking on the phone causes disturbances and distractions, and that might have been the result of this accident,” he said.
The incident remains under investigation by Dearborn Heights police.
