Fort Worth, TX : One killed in wrong-way, multi-vehicle crash in east Fort Worth on May 9th 2014
Police say a man turned into oncoming traffic on Trinity Boulevard, traveled a quarter- to a half-mile down the road, and caused a deadly, chain-reaction crash just as rush hour was winding down Friday evening.
A witness saw a maroon van driven by a man believed to be in his 30s turn onto Trinity Boulevard from House Anderson Road, near the border of Fort Worth and Euless, around 6 p.m.
That van traveled eastbound in the westbound lanes before clipping the side of a Chevrolet near the intersection of Trinity and Rodolphus Street. Police say the van then hit a black SUV head-on.
The impact killed the passenger in the SUV, who police say was an adult woman. The driver of that vehicle went to the hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.
A silver sedan crashed into the back of the SUV. That driver also had non-life-threatening injuries.
A fifth vehicle was clipped by the van as it slid. No one inside that car was injured.
The van flipped onto its side and caught fire. Police say it was a minor fire and a patrol officer put out the flames with an extinguisher.
Dwayne Anders pulled up at the scene minutes after the crash.
"It's scary. It could've been me," he said.
Anders said he drives that route every day to and from work, usually about that same time.
"People do speed out here. On the way to work, they're flying. On the way home, they're flying," he said. "It looks like a NASCAR race out here."
Fort Worth police said they found no evidence of drugs or alcohol in the van, but they are not ruling that out as a cause. The driver's blood will be drawn at the hospital and the results of a toxicology test will determine what charges he faces.
"I don't know how you can go the wrong way," Anders said, "unless you're impaired or texting, or just not paying attention."
The identities of those involved in the crash have not been released.
