Sarasota County, FL : Six people injured, including children, in North Port crash on Sunday afternoon, April 24, 2016

Six people, including four children, were injured Sunday afternoon in a crash at Toledo Blade and Cranberry-Plantation boulevards in North Port, police report.

According to the North Port Police Department, a silver Mazda driven by Valerie Nieves of Port Charlotte was crossing the intersection at about 4 p.m. when it went into the path of a Chevrolet driven by Jennifer L. Pyott of North Port. The Chevrolet struck the Mazda on the passenger side, police say, and the impact was so forceful that the Mazda came to rest in a wooded area off the road.

Nieves suffered critical injuries and was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, police report. Pyott and four children aged 3 to 6 , who were properly restrained, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital's North Port Emergency Room, police say.

The crash is under investigation.
