Laurel, MT : two people dead after a head-on collision on I-90 near Laurel on Monday night, February 1, 2016

Montana Highway Patrol confirms two are dead after a head-on collision on I-90 near Laurel on Monday night.

A passenger truck was driving west bound on I-90 when the driver tried to pass a slower-moving vehicle. The driver of the truck lost control of the car and spun into oncoming traffic. The truck was hit by a semi-truck traveling eastbound.

The passenger truck burst into flames. The semi-truck driver tried to extinguish the fire but was unable.

The driver of the passenger truck and the passenger both died on scene. MHP says it is unclear whether they died from the initial impact or the flames. They have not been able to identify the victims, they do believe the driver was a male.

The semi-truck driver is a 59-year-old Missoula man. He walked away with no injuries.

Highway Patrol says they do not know if alcohol or speed were factors in the crash. They say icy roads may have contributed.

The section of I-90 was closed until around 4 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The incident happened near mile marker 430 around 9:45 p.m. Monday.
