Aurora, CO : Two children seriously injures, Aurora man driving semi-truck spurs three-vehicle crash in Jefferson County on Wednesday afternoon, July 6, 2016

An Aurora man behind the wheel of a semi-truck was not injured in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon, July 6, in Jefferson County that injured five others, including two children who were seriously injured.

Carlos Monroy, 60, of Aurora, was driving a 1999 Peterbuilt semi-truck with tractor about 2:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near Highway 6 when the truck hit a 2016 Chevy Malibu that had slowed for a lane closure in the construction zone. According to Colorado State Patrol spokesman Trooper Nate Reid, the Malibu spun into the closed left lane and the semi-truck continued forward and struck the rear of a 2009 Toyota Yaris that was ahead of the Malibu.

Two children in the Malibu’s back seats — a 5-year-old girl and 8-year-old boy — were taken to Children’s Hospital Colorado with serious injuries, while the driver — a 40-year-old man — and a 40-year-old female in the front passenger seat were taken to St. Anthony Hospital with moderate injuries. Both children in the Malibu were seated properly in booster seats.

The Yaris driver — a 40-year-old woman — was taken to St. Anthony with what Reid described as minor injuries.

The crash is under investigation by CSP.
