Douglas County, OR : Two people dead and one injured in double fatal crash on Highway 138 east of Roseburg near Steamboat Creek on Sunday afternoon, April 12, 2015

Two people are dead, one adult was seriously injured and a toddler escaped serious injury in an accident next to Highway 138, about 40 miles east of Roseburg that was discovered on Sunday afternoon.

Sergeant Matt Bowersox of Oregon State Police says that at about 1:00 p.m. a man from Bend, who was rafting on the North Umpqua River near Steamboat Creek, discovered a sedan that had driven off the roadway and crashed into a group of trees near the river. The rafter pulled to shore to investigate the situation.

Lieutenant Josh Brooks of OSP says that the driver of the vehicle, identified as 25 year old Christopher Brady and a passenger, 34 year old Candice Nixon, both of Roseburg, were both found deceased in the vehicle. An adult passenger in a rear seat was seriously injured and pinned inside the car. Brady’s three year old boy was found in the car as well. He was removed from the vehicle by the rafter who then went up to the highway and summoned help.

The adult passenger, whose name has not been released, was taken by air ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield with serious injuries. The toddler was taken to Mercy Medical Center where police expected him to be treated and released for minor injuries.

Lieutenant Josh Brooks says authorities are not sure when the wreck happened, but troopers believe it may have taken place sometime Saturday evening when the group was returning from a fishing trip. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
