ROLLING PRAIRIE, IN : Head-on collision on U.S. 20 injures 4 on Sunday, June 18, 2017
An initial investigation shows the occupants of an eastbound passenger car were changing radio stations when the driver strayed over the centerline and collided with a westbound vehicle about 6:15 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 20 just east of CR-300E near Rolling Prairie, police said.
Four people, all from Elkhart, were seriously injured in the head-on crash, according to a news release from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department. None of the injuries was considered life-threatening.
Deputies were still investigating the cause of the crash Sunday night, the release said.
The initial investigation found that a Ford Crown Victoria was traveling east and a Toyota Scion was traveling west, police said. Witnesses told police the Scion crossed the centerline and struck the eastbound Ford.
The driver of the Ford, Kenneth Winquist, 23, tried to avoid being struck but was unable to do so, according to police. He was initially reported in critical condition and flown by medical helicopter to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
The driver of the Toyota, Justine Mains, 18, and a front-seat passenger, Breiona Albright, 17, were seriously injured, police said. The back-seat passenger, Asia Vannarath, 18, was reported to be critically injured and also was flown by medical helicopter to Memorial Hospital.
Two occupants of the Toyota said they were changing the radio station when the passenger in the rear of the vehicle noticed they were crossing the centerline and yelled, but the warning was too late to avoid a collision, according to investigating officer Deputy Wade Wallace.
Winquist, a member of the Indiana National Guard who was returning home from weekend duty in Gary, according to the release, told investigators he saw the Toyota cross the centerline and braked hard to avoid the collision but was unable to avoid the collision.
La Porte County Emergency Medical Service responded with three ambulances. Two air ambulances, Memorial MedFlight and Lutheran Air, also responded to the scene. All four lanes of U.S. 20 were closed between CR-300E and CR-350E until about 7:45 p.m.
A third vehicle traveling east on U.S. 20 swerved to avoid the crash and struck a wood post and a garbage can. One occupant of that vehicle complained of pain and sought medical treatment on her own, according to the sheriff’s department.
Protocol calls for the drivers of both vehicles to be tested for alcohol and drugs but test results were still pending Sunday night.
