Columbus, OH : Vermilion Township crash kills Bay Village man on Tuesday, September 19th 2017
Authorities have released the identity of the victim who died in a two-car crash in Vermilion Township on Sept. 19, according to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Donald Spence Jr., 62, of Bay Village, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at the interchange of state Route 2 and state Route 60, according to the Patrol.
At 5:53 p.m., a 2011 Jeep Patriot driven by Spence was traveling westbound on Route 2 near Route 60 when it entered the median before driving between the two bridges crossing over Route 60, according to the Patrol.
The Jeep then drove off of the embankment between the bridges going airborne over the northbound lane and landing in the southbound lane of Route 60.
As that happened, a beige 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling southbound on Route 60 in the right lane going under Route 2 and struck the Jeep as it continued west across the roadway, according to the Patrol.
The Jeep then truck a guard rail and came to rest on the west side of Route 60 as the Chevy then struck a guard rail and came to rest in the right-hand land of Route 60 southbound.
Spence was not wearing a seatbelt, the report said.
The driver of the Chevy, James Wade, 45, of Vermilion, was not injured in the crash. His juvenile daughter riding in the truck suffered non-incapacitating injuries, according to the report.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash and speed is being considered as a factor, the Patrol said. The crash remains under investigation, according to the Patrol.
Other agencies on scene included Vermilion Township Fire Department, North Central EMS, and Erie County Sheriff’s Office.
