Memphis, TN : One Person Killed In Crash On Bill Morris Parkway on Thursday morning, November 13, 2014
A single-car crash on Highway 385 eastbound near Hacks Cross Road claimed the life of 27-year-old Ray Rhodes Jr. on Thursday morning.
Rhodes was like many other drivers on the roadways, surprised by the icy conditions, just trying to get to work.
Shelby County sheriff's deputies say Rhodes lost control of his Ford pickup truck on Bill Morris Parkway. It flipped, the force throwing him from the truck. He was injured but conscious enough to dial his mother's phone number. His mother told WMC Action News 5 that her son called her at 6:10 a.m. after the crash.
"He told me he had slid on some ice and he hit the ramp and went over, but he said he had got out and he was fine,” Linda Rhodes said.
But, those turned out to be a few of his last words. Minutes later, Linda got another frantic call from her husband.
"He called and told me that our son had been deceased and that he has passed," she sighed. "Oh Lord, help me. Help me, Lord."
Family and friends stopped by the family's home in Frayser on Thursday afternoon, many offering their condolences.
His mother says her youngest son, whom they call Ray Ray, celebrated his 27th birthday just four days ago.
"Yesterday we were just sitting up talking and getting ready for the holidays,” said Linda.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been set.
