Griffin, GA : Students evacuated safely after fiery bus crash on Friday, November, 10th 2017

A Douglas County bus driver is being hailed as a hero for getting the students on her bus off safely after a fiery two-car accident Friday afternoon.

Douglas County School System Transportation Director Andy Micacchione said the accident occurred at the intersection of Maxham Road and Old Alabama Road near the Cobb County line when a truck ran a red light, causing another vehicle to be pushed under the bus, which was carrying students from Turner Middle School. The vehicle that was pushed under the bus caught on fire and the fire spread to the school bus with students still inside, according to Micacchione.

The bus driver, Sharonda Richardson, and student passengers evacuated the bus and escaped injury, said Portia Lake, spokeswoman for the school system.

"All students are safe and have been reunited with their parents," Lake said late Friday.
