Williamson, West Virginia
Grief counselors were at Martin County Middle School in Kentucky on Thursday to help students and staff mourn the loss of a 14-year-old boy who died in a tragic bike accident.
Austin Blake Meade, of Warfield, died early Wednesday morning after riding a bike downhill without working brakes, eventually crashing into a metal drain pipe at approximately 50 mph, police said.
The boy had been riding bikes with his cousin along Poplar Fork Road near Beauty, Kentucky, at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Martin County Sheriff John Kirk told EKB-TV. The cousin lost sight of Meade after he began speeding downhill and around a curve, losing his flip-flop shoes in the process.
Kirk believes Meade lost control of his bike and crashed into a metal drain pipe near a creek bed, he told the news outlet. Meade was reported missing early Wednesday morning and sheriff's deputies discovered his body after an approximate two-hour search.
Kirk told the news outlet Meade's death appears an accident and no foul play is suspected. Kirk was out of the office on Thursday and school representatives confirmed Meade's identity.
A representative said counselors were at the school this week to help mourn Meade's loss and help students and teachers deal with their grief.
Meade's funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hode Church of God along Hode Road in Warfield, Kentucky. A burial service will follow at the family's cemetery, according to Meade's obituary.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Callaham Funeral Home in Inez, Kentucky.
