Torrance, CA : Firefighters paid tribute to Marietta on April,Wednesday 12th 2017
Firefighters paid tribute Wednesday to Marietta, Georgia firefighter Ron Herens, 23, who was killed by a suspected drunken driver while vacationing in Southern California.
Los Angeles county and city firefighters escorted the hearse carrying Herens’ body from the county coroner’s office in Los Angeles to Rice Mortuary in Torrance. The procession traveled south on the 110 Freeway and went west on Torrance Boulevard.
Torrance firefighters also honored Herens along the route.Police said a suspected drunken driver ran a red light and crashed into a car carrying Herens and two fellow Marietta firefighters Monday night at Ocean Avenue and Washington Boulevard near the border of Venice and Marina del Rey. Herens was killed. The other firefighters, Dillon Guest and Doug Blanchard, were injured, but participated in Wednesday’s escort.
They visited with local firefighters in Venice before the crash, firefighters said.
The suspected drunken driver, 23-year-old Benjamin Albert Seider, was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. He was released from jail Tuesday after posting $100,000 bail, but is scheduled to appear in Airport court on May 2.
Herens, a firefighter for four years, will be transported to Georgia, where his family will hold funeral services in his hometown of Powder Springs on April 19.
