Martinsburg, West Virginia
A Hampshire County man is dead after a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 81 near the Tabler Station Road exit, according to West Virginia State Police.
The victim was identified as Robert Louis Peterson, 33, of Springfield, W.Va., West Virginia State Police Sgt. J.D. Burkhart said in a news release.
Peterson was traveling north in a 2000 Subaru Outback on Interstate 81 when the vehicle traveled across the median into the southbound lanes of the highway and struck a 2011 Dodge Ram truck, police said.
The truck driver, Walter Trail, 46, of Hedgesville, W.Va., was not injured, but was taken to Berkeley Medical Center as a precaution, police said.
The crash was reported just after 6 a.m. Police said it is unclear why Peterson's vehicle crossed the median.
Burkhart estimated that I-81 was shut down for about two hours or more as a result of the crash.
