Gila Bend, AZ : Baby dead, Mesa mom still in critical condition after 238 crash Saturday morning on October 4, 2014
Authorities say a 3-month-old baby boy is dead after a vehicle rolled over on a highway south of Phoenix.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says the crash happened Saturday morning on State Route 238 between Gila Bend and Maricopa.
Deputies say the driver of a Chevrolet Suburban carrying seven people — three adults, three children and the infant — lost control and over-corrected.
They say the infant was on the mother's lap and neither was using seat restraints. Both were ejected from the vehicle.
The mother was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, said Chris Hegstrom , a spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. A passenger in the front seat suffered serious injuries.
The children, who were wearing seatbelts, suffered minor injuries and the driver was uninjured. No names or ages of anyone in the vehicle were released.
Authorities say speed was a contributing factor.
The car was part of a caravan heading to Rocky Point in Mexico.
