Chicago, IL : Fort Meade Marine dies in Gambrills crash on Friday, February 24th 2017
A 21-year-old Marine stationed at Fort George G. Meade died after being struck by a car while riding his motorcycle in Gambrills Friday afternoon.
Anne Arundel police said officers responded to a report of a crash in the area of Patuxent Road near Conway Road around 3:37 p.m. on Friday.
Police said a BMW 335i sedan traveling southbound on Patuxent Road lost control and struck a motorcycle driven by James Ray Walden, 21, of Peoria Heights, Illinois.
Walden, an active duty Marine at Fort Meade, was thrown from his Yamaha motorcycle as a result of the crash and was declared dead at the scene.Police said that the BMW, driven by Martin Martinez Ballinas, 28, of Crofton, then fled the scene as police arrived.
Ballinas was apprehended later by police after he was found hiding in a quarry about a 1/4 mile south of the crash scene, police said.
A passenger in the car, Kevin Rolando Perez Velasquez, 22, of Crofton, sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash. Police said Ballinas was not injured.
The Anne Arundel County Police Department's Traffic Safety division is handling the investigation into the crash and charges are pending review by the county's States Attorney's Office.
