OSOLO TOWNSHIP, IN : Three-vehicle collision on the Indiana Toll Road on April, Tuesday 18th 2017
A woman with non-life-threatening injuries was airlifted from the scene of a three-vehicle collision on the Indiana Toll Road Tuesday afternoon.
The 24-year-old woman had been trapped in her SUV for more than an hour after the 3:15 p.m. crash involving two semi-trucks in the westbound lanes near mile marker 94. The collision happened where traffic was slowing for a repaving project around the Casspolis Street interchange near mile marker 92.
An Indiana State Police trooper said the woman driving a 2007 Lexus SUV and a semi-truck towing a regular box trailer were at a near standstill in the right lane when another semi-truck towing a tanker trailer failed to slow down in time. That truck swerved into the left lane to avoid a collision, but clipped the rear of the Lexus, sideswiped it and shoved it against the other semi-truck.
The Bristol, Elkhart and Osolo Township fire departments all worked to extricate the woman from the Lexus for about an hour. A Memorial MedFlight helicopter then airlifted her to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment of non-life-threatening facial injuries.
The westbound lanes of the toll road were closed for several hours while crews worked to free the woman and then cleaned up the scene. Westbound traffic was diverted off the freeway at Exit 96 on C.R. 17. With the Cassopolis Street interchange at Exit 92 closed, traffic had to go all the way to Mishawaka to get back on the toll road.
Eastbound traffic also was closed for a short time while the MedFlight helicopter landed and took off.
A 72-year-old man from Alabama was identified as the driver of the semi pulling the tanker while a 64-year-old man from New York was driving the semi pulling the regular trailer. Indiana State Police did not indicate whether any citations were issued.
