Lafayette, IN : Drunk driver crashes stolen car early Sunday, February 5, 2017
Police say Keith L. Wilson was drunk and driving a stolen a car when he crashed into a utility pole early Sunday, closing the 3200 block of Union Street for roughly three hours.
Officers responding to the crash at 12:45 a.m. observed Wilson, 27, of Riverdale, Ill., fleeing the scene on foot, Sgt. Scott Galloway said in a written release.
After further investigation, police determined the vehicle had been stolen from a business in the 300 block of North Earl Avenue, the news release states.
Galloway said Union Street was closed while crews cleared the roadway of downed power lines and a utility pole that was snapped in half during the crash.
He added that an ambulance driving in the area moments after the accident was damaged by the downed lines.
Wilson is being held at Tippecanoe County Jail on preliminary charges of operating while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting law enforcement and auto theft.
