Orange County, FL : Bicyclist killed in crash along State Road 520 in Orange County on Tuesday, 29th January 2019
A bicyclist was killed in a Tuesday morning crash along State Road 520 in Orange County, troopers said.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, the 52-year-old man was piloting a bike that was towing a trailer and a dog, which survived the crash. Authorities have not publicly identified the man, who was pronounced dead at AdventHealth East Orlando.
Troopers said the crash involved two motor vehicles, a Toyota Scion and a Nissan SUV, both of which were traveling eastbound on State Road 520 near Macon Parkway about 10:15 a.m.
The bicyclist was also eastbound, riding on the shoulder.
The Nissan driver, Brian Merritt, 42 of Apopka, said he moved from the right lane to the left lane to give room for the bicyclist. The Scion driver, Joshua Knight, 26 of Orlando, said he saw the Nissan move in front of him and tried to change into the right lane.
Knight lost control of the Scion, troopers said, and struck the right side of the SUV. The impact of that collision redirected the car, which then hit the bicycle, according to the FHP.
Knight suffered minor injuries, troopers said. Merritt was not hurt.
The crash remains under investigation.
