Huntsville,TX : Saturday evening accident sends 11 to hospital on September, Saturday 16th 2017
Traffic on Interstate 45 was heavy all day Saturday as a major Texas Department of Transportation construction project reduced the interstate to one lane in each direction between Huntsville and New Waverly. The southbound lanes of I-45 were closed approximately five miles north of New Waverly and southbound traffic was diverted over to the north side of the freeway where both north and south traffic shared two lanes throughout the construction zone.
On Saturday evening, just as traffic was starting to clear around 7:30 p.m., multiple 911 calls came into the Walker County Public Safety Communication Center, reporting an accident near the north end of the construction zone. New Waverly firefighters and an ambulance from Walker County EMS were dispatched to the scene. Emergency workers arrived on the scene to find seven vehicles with varying degrees of damage. Additional EMS units were dispatched as EMTs and firefighters began to triage and treat nearly a dozen occupants.
While the damage to some of the vehicles was severe, none of the injuries to the people involved in the wreck appeared to be life-threatening.
Walker County EMS units transported 11 patients to Huntsville Memorial Hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Firefighters remained on the scene and assisted several tow operators as they worked to clear the freeway as quickly as possible.
The freeway was cleared just after 9 p.m., but traffic remained heavy for quite some time due to the extended closure.
Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating the cause of the accident.
