LAWRENCE COUNTY, MS : Car crashes into church in Lawrence County on Monday, August 28, 2017

A man is facing charges after investigators say he crashed into a historic church in Lawrence County.

The crash happened a little after 2 a.m. Monday at Silver Creek Baptist Church.

The Lawrence County Sheriff’ss Department says Justin Williams was taken to the hospital after losing control and slamming into the side of the church.

Authorities said the 30-year-old was involved in a hit-and-run before the crash and tried to leave the scene. Williams was allegedly driving a red car with a suspended license and no insurance, according to authorities.

No one was inside the building at the time of the crash. The church was built in 1814 and has close to 50 members.
